When measuring for tall riding boots, put on the breeches and socks you will use most often. Use a cloth tape measure. Boot height should be measured while sitting in a chair with your knees at a right angle. Measure boot height from the floor by your heel to the break in the back of your knee. Add at least a 1/2 inch for drop.

 Properly measured boots will be just a bit too tall at first and the boot tops will hit the tendons behind the knee. This is normal. After a few days of wearing your new boots, the ankle area will soften and crease and drop approximately a 1/2 inch. Calf width should be measured around your calf at the widest point, adding 1/8 inch for comfort.
